Four Nights and Dazed in France, Part I

July 11-15, 2004

Bonjour, France!

Paris | Versailles | Bastille Day

Beaune

Walled capital of Burgundy wine country. Also surrounded by the Cote de Beaune vineyards. Features Hotel-Dieu of the Hospices de Beaune, a hospital from the Middle Ages built in 1443 to care for sick and starving town residents. Its roof of glazed multicolored tiles in geometric patterns. Its courtyard well with Gothic wrought iron.

Elsewhere, the Collegiale Notre-Dame church, Place Carnot town square, and Place Monge square with a statue of Gaspard Monge, 1746-1818. (Born in the Beaune, Monge invented descriptive geometry, a graphical protocol that, uh, er, creates 3-D virtual space on a two-dimensional plane.)

A friendly, informative session on tasting well and the good taste of Burgundy wines. And a sample of escargot at dinner but declined the frog legs. Délicieux cheeses and desserts!
